Victoria West accommodation

Every now and then, as a family, we are fortunate enough to go away with other families and have incredible weekends of fun and laughter. Usually, we go away with friends or family, or both, to places where at least someone has been before and knows the ins and outs of the holiday destination.

Our trip to Melton Wold was different. We had no idea what to expect, but only knew that the people that had recommended it to my mother, keep returning year after year. 2011 has been a rather diffcult year for my whole family, and the idea of a week away with my kids, sister, her kids and my folks was heaven. Unfortunately, as per my curse it seems, it rains wherever I go on holiday, so our first day at Melton Wold shouldn't have been so unexpected - non-stop rain in a semi-arid region of the country. I think we experienced the annual rainfal in 24 hours. That just served as a day to get to know the other kids and families staying at M W in a smaller space. Within an hour, all kids knew names and ages, were playing happily together and getting along with it. The rest of the week was just a time with new friends. it was fantastic.

To spend a week not worrying about cooking and cleaning, or whether the kids are safe, or bored is a true gift and holiday. Everyone co-parents - so when we were walking in the incredible Karoo searching for buck and other animals (and for the older boys - skeletal remains of bokkies, tortoises and more), we had at least an extra 8 children joining our brood. That meant that at another time, when other parents were mountain biking, quad biking, taking kids for horse rides or just playing bowls on the lawn, our kids were in the mix and happy and safe. As a parent - it is a dream.

Don't expect a TV in every room, or 5 star fanciness. Melton Wold is a place where if the kids stampede through the hall with dirty feet, as long as they are happy, no-one minds. It is a small treasure for those who would rather end the day dirty and exhausted, having spent a day bonding with family and friends. The setting is beautiful, the people friendly and interesting - and best of all - NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION.

So bring bikes, cricket bats and balls, hiking boots and books, sunblock, wellies (just in case you are like me and bring the rain) and get ready to chill!

Thank you Melton Wold - see you for Easter :-)
